Our client, a Successful Medical Device Company with over 60 worldwide locations, is continuing to expand New Product Development. The Senior or Principle BioPhotonics Engineer will report to the Director of Global R&D to focus on a new technology venture involving electro-mechanical invasive devices that will use optics and biophotonics technology. This role will be a Senior or Principle level scientist/engineer position with individual contributor and team lead responsibilities. You will be able to get in on the ground floor of a well-funded, new product development initiative with a company whose R&D program has a passionate, forward-thinking culture. We are looking for interested candidates with a variety of knowledge in: Biophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Biophotonics, optical physics, optical imaging techniques (such as two-photon microscopy, optical microscopy, OCT, photo-acoustic microscopy, etc), optical spectroscopy, photodynamic therapy (PDT)or biophotonic sensors. This Senior BioPhotonics Engineer or Scientist, with a strong Optics background, will support internal, external, and collaborative research and technology development efforts. Significant activities for this job include: conducting applied research in the area of biophotonics, providing guidance in the development of long term technology strategies, identifying potential research partners, initiating research projects with those partners and help managing the research projects to successful completion. Details include:

Initiate investigations into new applications and oversee technology development from research to product.
Complete early stage research and proof of concept work to establish technical and business feasibility.
Collaborate with industrial and academic partners to identify, advance and implement new technologies.
Identify both internal and external approaches and project plans for developing the technology
Compile, organize, and interpret technical data.
Develop customer requirements and product specifications.
Support personnel in authoring research papers for internal review and publication.
Support and refine global technology strategic direction in the Biophotonics area for the business.
Participate in assessment of technology, IP, and business landscape.
Coach, motivate, and foster development of junior technical staff.
Coordinate and manage state of art searches, patent disclosures and participate in patent portfolio decisions.







Job Requirements

Background Required/Preferred:

Bachelors degree in scientific or engineering is required. Engineering or Scientific degree at Masters level or above is preferred. Prefer combination of academic and industrial research experience. Technical fields of interest include Biophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Biophotonics, or equivalent.

Minimum 5 years relevant research and development experience of which 1 or more years are in the medical device field.
Solid foundation in optical physics.
Must have strong background in optical imaging techniques (such as two-photon microscopy, optical microscopy, OCT, photo-acoustic microscopy, etc), optical spectroscopy, and biophotonic sensors.
Significant experience in modeling light-tissue interactions and photon migration in scattering / turbid medium.
Considerable laboratory experience in biophotonics including working with optical characterization and metrology tools (digital imaging systems, microscopes, interferometers, spectrometers, power meters, etc.).
Good understanding of laser electronics.
Adept at using commercially available optical modeling tools (such as Zemax, ASAP, LightTools, Code V, etc.).
Experience in DOE, statistical techniques, and Minitab.
Project leadership skills, independent as well as cross functional team leadership, presentation skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills.




Other Preferred Skills:
Experience in product development cycles from concept through production.
Optical design experience.
Familiarity with various applications of photodynamic therapy (PDT).
Knowledge of components in high speed optical communications.
Experience in computer vision and image processing.
Strong understanding of design for manufacturability and reliability.
Ability to understand and contribute to decision making on technology and research opportunities.
Ability to present technical information to both technical and non technical personnel effectively.
Able to converse at the technology strategy level as well as at the detailed technical level.



Some travel within USA and globally, less than 25%.
